Most Drupal site owners are aware that if their sites are on Drupal 7 they need to begin to plan ahead for a major upgrade in the next year or so. Many people are waiting until Drupal 7 is ‘End of Life’. End of life for Drupal 7 is currently scheduled for November 2022.
[Update 24 Feb 2022; D7 End of life extended to November 1, 2023, and perhaps even beyond.]
At EOL, Drupal sites will continue working but security and other updates will become increasingly harder to manage, and as Server configurations (eg PHP versions) are updated sites breaking becomes more and more a possibility.
There are a number of choices, including:
- Wait and see
- Migrate your site to Drupal 8 or 9
- Migrate your site to Backdrop CMS 1
For choices 2, and 3 we believe the optimal time to bring in planning and testing is now. The next best optimal time to have this on the budgetary radar is before mid 2022.
The time to migrate is approaching.
